I saw one of these on the side of the road about a week back and I’ve been obsessed ever since even though I hated them when I was younger. I’ve heard that the trannies have some issues - is that true? Have a fun-lookin’ dude leaning on his red car for your time. :)

So here’s the problem with DSMs, specifically 3kGTs/Stealth/GTOs:
The engine is sideways. This means good luck getting to the rear spark plugs, and it means the turbo piping is an absolute disaster, even moreso since it’s a MAF car so the pipes go from the filter, through the MAF, to the front and rear of the engine, snake around to the front to the intercoolers, then back to the rear of the engine to the intake. It took two experienced DSM guys 40 hours of nonstop work just to upgrade the turbos in a 3000GT. And don’t buy a naturally aspirated one unless you want to get outrun by a Buick Park Avenue Ultra, which weighs the same yet has more power, comfort, and room for your local college’s cheer team.
It’s AWD (if you got the only one worth getting) and the transfer case to go with a sideways transmission snakes around the steering rack, subframe, driveshafts (so many driveshafts), sway bar, and exhaust, making replacing things that *should* be simple a nearly engine-out affair.
The rear end bushings are garbage.
More stupid vacuum shit than an 80s muscle car, and all of it will break and be a pain in the ass to fix.
Electrical issues. The fancy animated HVAC display is guaranteed to not work right and the power chairs are amazing (motorized bolsters!) until they break. IDK how Mitsu made power chairs so much worse than everyone else did during this era but... they managed.
Seriously. Look at this crap. My friend’s V12 twin turbo S-class is easier to work on than this shit.

Great response, I’ve always admired these cars, but now glad I didn’t own one. Sounds like a nightmare to work on

They’re fantastic to look at (especially the earlier 3000GT VR-4) and modified ones are great to drive (like a WRX STi had a run-in with a c5 corvette) but it’s very, VERY hard to make a logical case for owning one.

I agree on the early year models, I never liked the big Supra wing on the 3000GT’s

I know, you’re tellin’ me! Haha! I’ve been carless for a few years now (used to post on here all the time, back in the day) but I’m getting the itch again. I remember hearing about how terrible these things were, but there’s something about it... Just looks great.

I’ve heard that they’re very, very bad. Do I still want a later 3000GT VR4, yes absolutely.

They are terrible. And the insides are dog shit.
And yes I still like them.
